The show idea is simple: John Mollison (an aviation artist and history writer) draws a representative of the "old guy's" service and in the process, asks a lot of questions.
OGTA is no particular lover of celebrity culture...but that's because we've know better.
On one hand, the people we've interviewed are just bodies you'd brush past at the grocery store. But, on the other hand, they're ordinary people who've performed extraordinarily well under even more extraordinary circumstances.
South Dakotan, Lakotan and Warrior, John C. Waldron's story is the only one that features someone we couldn't physically interview. Yet his story reaches across time anyway. Filmed in South Dakota, North Dakota, Texas and Arizona
"Bob" is awesome! Former head of the 20th Air Force and on-site inspection chief on a number of nuclear agreements with Russia and the former Soviet Union, Bob is uniquely qualified to represent the "Missileer" story. Filmed in California and North Dakota
John Wilkinson's greatest charm was that he was so much fun to be around - sweet, charming... "Would you like tea?" But during WWII, he was an ace Spitfire pilot who was LETHAL against the Nazi-lead Luftwaffe. Filmed in South Dakota (of all places!).
Taken POW on his first combat mission against the Japanese in Burma, Chris's story of disease, torture, death and brutality would make you weep if it weren't for the man's extraordinary courage and choice in women. Filmed in Florida.
Charlie Plumb is one of the most respected representatives of the Vietnam War's POWs. Charlie was gracious enough to let OGTA film what happened when he returned to Hanoi to meet his former captors... wow! Filmed in Vietnam and California.
Our fantastic story - a Greek jumps ship in America to go to Canada so he can travel to England to fight the Germans but ends up with the French Resistance. Steve Pisanos is one of, if not the, American dream. Filmed in California
OGTA #5 - COL. JOHN STILES and LT. NGUYEN HONG MY
"Hong My" shot down John Stiles during the Vietnam War. But today, so many years after the fact, do you think there's any bad blood between them? Well, there was...but that's all gone now. :) Filmed on location in Vietnam.
OGTA #4 - COL. JOHN "BOB" PARDO
What Bob Pardo did to help his friend is one of the most audacious, outrageous acts in aviation (if not more). For this, Bob deserves the legend-status he's achieved. But there's SO MUCH MORE to this story...Filmed in Texas.
OGTA #3 - COL. RICHARD "DICK" RUTAN
Combat veteran (MISTY pilot in Vietnam) and world adventurer (Flew around the world, non stop), Dick Rutan is one of those bad-ass guys that look good in movies. In-person, just talking about life? He looks even better. Filmed in South Dakota.
OGTA #2 - LT. CLAUDE HONE
Claude flew Corsairs in WWII, taking part in the first Marine strike on Tokyo. Later, Claude flew with Joe Foss in the inaugural squadron of the South Dakota Air National Guard. However 'this' is not why Claude is so cool...
OGTA #1 - MAJ. RICH HALL
Our first OGTA. But, arguably, always our best. Rich set the tone for every OGTA to come with his forthright answers to difficult questions, devotion to family and friends and trusting us with a challenging story. There may be equals but none better. Filmed in South Dakota.
OGTA IS FOREVER GRATEFUL TO THE TRUST AND WISDOM OFFERED BY THESE GREAT "OLD GUYS"
